From Ireland to Australia - Laura' Journey

Saturday, May 28, 2011

Originally from Northern Ireland, I moved to Newcastle Upon Tyne in England where I lived for six years, and studied Occupational Therapy. Throughout my studies I developed a keen interest in facilitating return to work, and researched vocational rehabilitation services around the world.

Along with the lure of sunshine and barbeques, Australia offered vast evidence based research into Occupational Therapy in return to work, and offered unique employment opportunities for Occupational Therapists seeking to facilitate return to work rehabilitation services.

Before jetting off into the sunshine, I worked in various roles to build my knowledge and skills in work areas. I worked in a Plastic Surgery setting, developing knowledge of injury management processes and techniques. Following this I was involved in a Pilot service in the local area, to facilitate people with anxiety and depression back to work. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy was highly promoted in this role to challenge negative thoughts and behaviours that can create barriers for return to work. I spent two years building my skill base, when I decided to take a leap and search for a job in Australia, which supported my passion for return to work.

During my job search, I was keen to find a company that specialised in return to work services, but also valued each consultant for their individual skills and contribution to the team. I was highly impressed with Actevate, as alongside the need to provide occupational therapy services in WorkCover, I was also encouraged to continue adopting the cognitive behavioural approach which proved highly successful in my previous roles.

Following my job offer from Actevate, I packed my bags without hesitation, and jetted off to Sydney, enjoying my upgrade to Business class and champagne on take off, and of course a brief stop off in Thailand. Arriving in the middle of a heatwave, I resided at the beach until my first day of work. I was overwhelmed with the warm welcome I received from the team, and pleased with how quickly I settled into my new job role. Actevate have continued to impress me during my first three months in the post, providing support and advice, and also encouraging the use of individual styles and approaches that improve the return to work process.
