KidsXpress Life Through a Lens
NSW Art Gallery, 17th of February 2010, 6:30 - 9:00pm
Actevate proudly supports the charity KidsXpress, www.kidsexpress.org.au, which is very dear to our hearts. In September 2009 we were given the amazing opportunity to be part of a project that helps kids to believe in themselves, because every kid has the right to believe they can be amazing.
Let us take you on an inspiring journey through KidsXpress Life Through a Lens...
KidsXpress is a dynamic program for children 4-14 years who have faced challenges, loss and/or trauma in their lives. During the KidsXpress program kids are finding ways to cope with their situation through music, art and drama therapies, providing kids with the foundation to learn positive coping mechanisms for life.
In August last year Actevate Director Robert F. Migliore was deeply moved by a photography exhibition he visited in Orange sponsored by the Greater Western Mental Health Drug & Alcohol Service The purpose of the project was to give mentally ill people in the community an opportunity to share their lives through their photos-essentially through their own eyes.
Inspired by this amazing event Robert engaged world renowned photographer Vince Lovecchio as the curator for Life Through a Lens, a unique exhibition that reveals the life of a child through their eyes, emotions and reality. Children who have completed the KidsXpress program have been given a disposable camera to capture images of their lives. This powerful event displays the courage and healing of children with emotions to big too deal with alone.
Actevate and KidsXpress engaged the NSW Art Gallery and the Minister for Community Services and Planning, the Honourable Linda Burney MP to open the exhibition on the 17th of February 2010. We hope that by spreading the word of the project and the great work KidsXpress does, will reach a far greater audience and more kids will get the help they so desperately need.
